| Veterans' Day memories in Pattonville schools |
| Monday, November 23, 2009 |
Veterans in the community and throughout the nation were remembered and honored in Pattonville schools as part of the national observance of Veterans’ Day. Schools marked the occasion with social studies lessons in the classroom, visits from veterans, bulletin boards displaying photos of veterans from all eras and by writing letters to veterans. Several held special assemblies or events for veterans.

At Parkwood Elementary, a school assembly marked the day and included singing the National Anthem and reading a Veterans’ Day poem written by a former Parkwood student. In addition, Technical Sgt. Dave Zambruski of the 131st Security Forces of the National Guard presented a surprised Principal Gini Folk with a flag flown over his American military base in Eskan Village in the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia. Zambruski, who is a Maryland Heights police officer, used to be Parkwood’s D.A.R.E officer (Drug Abuse Resistance and Education). The school ended the assembly by allowing every student in the school to shake hands with the veteran guests.
At Pattonville High School, more than 60 U.S. veterans - including the school’s first male graduate - attended a Veterans’ Day celebration that included breakfast and a ceremony honoring local veterans. During the ceremony, John Abraham was inducted into the Pattonville High School Wall of Fame. Abraham is a World War II veteran who was the first male student to graduate from Pattonville High School as a member of the Class of 1938. (See page 2 for story.) The event also included performances by Pattonville’s honors orchestra, band and choir, a flag-folding ceremony and a missing-man ceremony performed by American Legion Post 213. A video created by student Alexia McGhee highlighted the history of Veterans’ Day, the number of American soldiers lost during each war in the country’s history and a montage of
students and staff thanking veterans for their service to the United States.
Activities continued with a Veterans’ Day celebration Thursday, Nov. 19 at Drummond Elementary School. Fifth-graders paid tribute to veterans through a musical performance. The event included a video celebration of current and former military soldiers. In addition, 1st Sgt. Joe Clark from VFW Post 3944 and Mike Dunham from American Legion Post 101 presented a flag to Drummond Elementary for honoring veterans. After the performance portion of the evening, participants enjoyed “Freedom Punch” and “Rations."
